Opposition to I-81 Widening and Tolls
A Shenandoah County resident and a coalition of conservation groups working in the northern Shenandoah Valley filed suit December 2007 in federal district court to prevent expansion of I-81 to eight to 12 lanes through most of the state.
VDOT's project would cost Valley residents, businesses and American taxpayers an estimated $11.4 billion.
April 6, 2009- The U.S. District Court (Western VA) in Charlottesville heard the case filed against VDOT and FWHA to block plans to widen I-81 to eight or more lanes- an expansion to be funded by federal funds and tolls on cars and trucks.
October 23, 2008- This motion was filed to block federal and state officials' plan to proceed with costly and destructive major highway widening on I-81 without considering alternatives to projects proposed in the future.
February 14, 2008- Seven citizens’ organizations joined a federal lawsuit to block plans to widen I-81 to eight or more lanes throughout most of western Virginia.

Since 2005, SVN and many others have questioned VDOT's plan to widen I-81 and implement tolls.
